A new space

Not like space space. Like astronaut, space. But web space.

For awhile now, I've been wanting to transition to a new space here on the web, primarily because I didn't want to keep paying a subscription to a website builder that I felt was overpriced. And with having learned a thing or two about building websites over the past few years (still learning), I wanted to take a crack at building a site using Eleventy, a simple static site generator.

This site is different from other sites I've built in the past because this is less of a professional portfolio and more of a way for me to process and share. It's a different approach. When I was primarily working as a photographer, I had a more polished portfolio and even recently, I was thinking I would maybe keep a more formal portfolio and put my writing somewhere else. But I didn't feel like managing two separate sites and I have recently made a shift in my life regarding photography, which I will probably spell out in a future post.

By the way, I'm not so sure I would consider myself a "writer" per se, but I enjoy writing. I'm not concerned about owning the title, but I just know that I enjoy it. Same with photography. I'm not caught up in the idea of being considered a "photographer" but I do enjoy making photographs.

For me, these are interpretive tools (writing and photography), ways of engaging with my life and the world around me.

I wrote that probably five years ago in a notebook and I still resonate with that.

I won't drag on here, but I will smack a quote here on the end of this post. I'm typically sharing a Christian Wiman quote anyways, and perhaps I've overshared this quote but I can't help myself. It's a good one.

Let us remember...that in the end we go to poetry for one reason, so that we might more fully inhabit our lives and the world in which we live them, and that if we more fully inhabit these things, we might be less apt to destroy both.

- Christian Wiman

Perhaps it's not just poetry (although, poetry is necessary), but maybe any creative act: filmmaking, painting, music, drawing, and others. These are all potential ways for us to bring our attention to what matters most to us.

Anyways.

Here's to better inhabiting our lives. And new web spaces.

Cheers!
